Introduction
Easter is a time of celebration, a time when we reflect on rebirth and renewal. It is also a time when chocolate plays a prominent role. But how did this tradition originate? And why specifically do we eat chocolate eggs during Easter?
Lent and chocolate
Easter is celebrated as a closing feast after a forty-day period when people were not allowed to eat meat, dairy products and eggs. This is called Lent. Indulgences, such as chocolate, had also been prohibited during Lent since the 18th century.

The Symbol of the Egg
The egg is seen worldwide as a symbol of fertility and the circle of life. Not surprisingly, chocolate eggs have made their appearance in our Easter traditions. A combination of the value of chocolate as a gift, and the symbolic value of the egg for the celebration of Easter!
The Origin of the Chocolate Egg
In the eighteenth century, two resourceful Parisian confectioners devised a luxurious variation on the “ordinary” Easter eggs. They made the chocolate in the mold of a real egg. This is how the chocolate egg came into being and since then it has become an important part of Easter celebrations.
Cru de Cacao
At Cru de Cacao, a chocolate shop located in Tilburg, they prepare luxury chocolate creations the artisanal way. For Easter, they have an assortment of deluxe Easter eggs and Easter chicks in three different flavors: Pure/Almond, Milk/Hazelnut, Caramel Himalayan Salt. These delicious creations are a perfect way to bring spring into your home and make your Easter celebration even more special.
